What Is the MP4 Video Downloader?

Many websites reference a video file URL directly in an HTML5 video tag (MP4, WebM, and so on), and the browser simply requests data from that URL during playback. These "direct-link" videos don't rely on any complex streaming protocol, yet the page often offers no download button.

The MP4 Video Downloader is the companion tool page of the GoFetch extension: the extension sniffs the static media resources loaded by the page, and when you click "Download" in the popup, the task is pushed to this page and starts automatically. The extension downloads the file completely in its original format — no transcoding, no re-encoding — so what you save is exactly the file on the server.

How to Use

  1. Install the GoFetch extension (see the installation tutorial in our blog) and pin it to the toolbar.
  2. Open a page containing a video and start playing it.
  3. Click the GoFetch icon on the toolbar and find the target direct-link file (the one with a blue play button) in the list — use the preview to confirm.
  4. Click "Download". The task is pushed to this page and starts automatically.
  5. When the download finishes, click "Save File" to save the video in its original format to your browser's download folder.

FAQ

Where do the saved files end up?

When a task completes, click "Save" and the video is saved through the browser into your default download folder. You can also find it in the browser's download history.

Why are some videos not detected?

The extension can only recognize video data loaded in conventional ways. If a site specially processes its video data or uses a private protocol, the resource cannot be captured. Let the video start playing first, then open the extension popup.

Why does the list show a bunch of small video fragments?

Some sites split a video into many small chunks requested separately, so a series of fragment URLs appears in the popup. In this case the complete video cannot be downloaded as a direct link.

The downloaded video has no sound — what can I do?

This usually means the site loads its audio separately, so the video file itself contains no audio track. You can download the video and audio files to your computer separately, then merge them with another tool.

The downloaded video won't play or shows a broken picture?

The file is saved with its original encoding, so the problem is most likely that your player doesn't support the codec — for example, MP4 files encoded with HEVC (H.265) are unsupported by many players. Try another player such as VLC.

How can I make downloads faster?

Speed mainly depends on your network and the video server's response, typically from a few hundred KB/s up to tens of MB/s. If the target video itself cannot play smoothly, your connection to it is poor; avoid playing the video while downloading to save bandwidth.

Which formats are supported?

Common direct-link media such as MP4, WebM and MP3 are supported and saved in their original format.

Can a direct-link download be paused halfway?

Direct-link downloads cannot be paused yet; only HLS tasks support segment-level resuming.

How many videos can I download at the same time?

Only one task is processed at a time for now, and a new task replaces the old one, so please download them one by one. Also note that task data is held in the browser's memory while downloading — the bigger the file, the more memory it uses, and running low on memory can crash the tab.

Does my file content pass through your servers?

No. All downloading and saving happen locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any third-party server.
